Having grown up in my large immediate family (8 kids), and a much larger extended family full of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and tons of cousins on both sides, I learned early on the value of family, connection, and community.

 

I also have a deep appreciation for my education. It included an excellent undergrad experience at Wayne State College (Nebraska), where I got a solid broad-based liberal arts degree.

 

That was followed by two years of service with the American Red Cross, and assignments to both the US Army and US Marines.

 

Right after that, I attended the University of South Dakota Law School, where I was a highly dedicated student. 

 

I feel lucky to have grown up in the wide-open spaces of the Great Plains, close to nature. So today, my favorite way to relax and recharge is to get outdoors, mainly at area lakes and rivers. 

 

My favorite recreation is any form of water sports like sailing, kayaking, and  canoeing.

Since age 23, I have been a dedicated fitness fan, including lap swimming, jogging, riding bikes, and weight training. Other hobbies include flying and travel.

Finally, my biggest "hobby" and most valuable time is simply keeping up with my large extended family. I refer to them affectionately as my "thundering herd."
